The first MOOC production studio in Russia We started in 2013 when we produced the Bioinformatics course for University of California, San Diego ordered by Pavel Pevzner, Ronald R. Taylor Professor of Computer Science and Director of the NIH Center for Computational Mass Spectrometry.
This course was the first one on Coursera created by a Russian production studio and gained over 35,000 students, who signed up to study on this course.
We then developed into three video studios in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg with a project team of MOOCs producers, designers and video editors. We have produced more than 50 courses for now.
We are able to handle complex projects and are not afraid to work with new trends We know how to transfer on-campus course into online form maintaining academic environment specifics. We work with scientific materials, respect copyright, adjust our work process to lecturers' busy schedule, produce multilingual courses with foreign authors and have vast experience in outdoor shooting.
We produce courses for publication on various MOOC platforms We know how to customize a course syllabus for the capabilities of a certain MOOC provider and how to gather a team of beta-testers and experts to evaluate the course before the launch. The courses of our production are published on Coursera, Iversity, and Russian MOOC providers such as Open Education and our platform Lektorium.
We take part in developing global open education Lektorium is a part of the Open Education Consortium, а non-profit, social benefit organization operating worldwide. It is a global network of educational institutions and organizations and supports an approach to education based on openness, including collaboration, innovation and collective development and use of open educational materials.
A particular committee of the Consortium monitors the evolution of massive open online courses. Committee members manage intellectual property in MOOCs, including the use of open licenses. They also develop the quality criteria of open content and supervises innovative practices, trends and open educational strategies in which MOOCs are used.
A great amount of scientific materials was needed for the syllabus of this course. Our team contacted NASA, ESA and Max Planck Institute to agree upon usage of images, computer models and to retain safe legal ground. As a result, this course has the sound of pulsars, the explosions of supernovae and the first seconds of a neutron star's life.
For this course we needed high-resolution images that were impossible to buy in photo stocks. Many of those provided by the author didn't have a permission of free use. We held a contest of illustrators and created scientifically accurate images of parasites for the diagrams of their life cycle and ceded the copyright to the university.
To show how the digestion system of an Ixodidae (hard tick) works, we collaborated with the Visual Science company to develop an interactive widget.
Kunstkamera Y is a common special project of paperpaper.media and the Kunstkamera, one of the richest ethnographical museums in the world. For the project we carried out special on-the-spot camerawork in the museum's repository as we couldn't use additional lightning because of exhibits' fragility there.
For these courses we shot the views of Petersburg that were described in classical books. We chose the best angles of showplaces and carried out field photography in houses where the great Russian writers lived.
The course about "digital hygiene" for high school and university students from the largest privately-owned cybersecurity company in the world.
We produce online courses for the leading universities and schools of Russia, further education centres for teachers and developers of state educational programs. We work with museums and companies that support educational initiatives and social projects.
